How to Buy a Handgun in Texas

General information from a licensed Texas FFL dealer, not legal advice. Current as of mid-2026 — laws change. Questions? Call (844) 845-9100.

Buying a handgun in Texas is simpler than most first-timers expect: no permit, no registration, no waiting period. Here’s exactly how it works when you buy from us.

Step 1 — Pick your handgun

Browse our inventory, or better: tell us what you want. We’re a special-order dealer — give us the make and model and we’ll source it, quote it clean, and have it ready for your appointment. If you’re not sure what fits your hand or your purpose (carry, home defense, range), that’s exactly the conversation an appointment is for.

Step 2 — Book your appointment

Every visit is one-on-one, by appointment, at our Weatherford or Shavano Park location. Book online or call. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID with your current address.

Step 3 — Eligibility and age

Federal law sets the baseline: you must be able to lawfully possess a firearm (no disqualifying convictions, no active protective orders, and so on). The long-standing federal minimum age to buy a handgun from a dealer has been 21, though recent court rulings have affected how that applies to 18-to-20-year-olds in Texas — ask us about the current rules when you book.

Step 4 — Form 4473 and the background check

At the shop you’ll complete ATF Form 4473 — the standard federal transfer form — and we’ll run the NICS background check. Most checks clear in minutes. If you hold a valid Texas License to Carry, it substitutes for the NICS check entirely, so there’s nothing to wait on.

Step 5 — Take it home

Once the check clears, you pay and walk out with your handgun the same day. Texas has no waiting period. We’ll make sure you leave knowing how your new pistol works, how to store it safely, and what ammunition it needs — grab a box from our ammo selection while you’re here.

Common questions

  • Do I need a License to Carry to buy? No — the LTC is optional. It speeds up the purchase and covers carrying; since 2021, Texans 21+ who can legally possess a handgun may also carry without a permit under constitutional carry.
  • Can I buy one as a gift? A genuine gift is legal; a straw purchase is a felony. See our FAQ for the difference.
  • Found it cheaper online? Buy it and ship it to us — here’s how transfers work. Or ask us to quote it first; anything bought through us transfers free.
