A short-barreled rifle — a rifle with a barrel under 16 inches or an overall length under 26 inches — is an NFA item, which means extra paperwork but nothing you can’t handle with a good dealer walking you through it. And as of January 1, 2026, the federal tax stamp for SBRs is $0. Here’s how to get one legally in Texas.
Two ways to get an SBR
Option 1 — Buy a factory SBR (Form 4)
Buy a complete short-barreled rifle from us or have one transferred in. We file an ATF Form 4 electronically — same process as a suppressor: fingerprints, passport-style photo, background check, then the wait for approval while the rifle stays logged with us. Our NFA transfer fee is $100 (free if you buy the SBR through us).
Option 2 — Build your own (Form 1)
Already own a rifle or pistol you want to convert? You file an ATF Form 1 — an application to make an NFA firearm — and wait for approval before putting the short barrel on. Form 1 approvals are typically fast through eForms. One extra requirement: the receiver must be engraved with the maker’s name and location (that can be you as an individual or your trust). We can point you to engraving and make sure your configuration is legal before you build.
Individual or trust?
Same choice as with suppressors: individual is simpler, a trust makes sharing and estate planning cleaner. We’ll walk you through it at your appointment.
Living with an SBR
- In Texas: SBRs are legal to own. Keep a copy of your approved form with the rifle.
- Crossing state lines: Unlike other firearms, taking an SBR to another state requires advance ATF approval (Form 5320.20). It’s a simple form — just plan ahead.
- Pistol first? Many buyers start with an AR pistol and Form 1 it later. If you’re weighing pistol vs. SBR, that’s a great appointment conversation.
What it costs at CTXO
- Federal tax stamp: $0 (since January 1, 2026)
- NFA transfer fee: $100 — free when you buy through us
- Special orders welcome: tell us the exact configuration you want and we’ll source it
